  • Approved Courses for Recertification

As stated in the Division of Fire Safety Certification Policy and Procedures Manual, Fire Service Instructor I and II, Live Fire Instructor/Live Fire Instructor-in-Charge, Fire Inspector I and II, and Fire Investigator certification levels expire three (3) years from the certification date or from date of renewal. Incident Safety Officer and Technical Rescuer Certification levels expire five (5) years from the certification date or from date of renewal. Hazardous Materials Technician certification expire one (1) year from the certification date or from date of renewal.

All renewals of certification MUST be submitted through your individual MODFS Acadis portal account. To access the MODFS Acadis portal CLICK HERE. The Division no longer accepts paper applications submitted by mail, fax or email. If you need assistance in accessing your portal account call 573-522-4849 or email training@dfs.dps.mo.gov.

Six (6) months prior to your expiration date you will be able to renew your expiring certification via the renew link in your portal account. Reminder emails will be sent to your email address of record at 90, 60, 30 and 3 days before your expiration date.

In the event an individual does not submit the required documentation for renewal, their certification status will be expired. If your certification has lapsed for no more than two (2) renewal cycles you can submit your documentation for all renewal cycles to be considered for re-instatement. If your certification is beyond the two (2) renewal cycles you will be required to successfully complete an approved course for the appropriate level, including passing scores on the written course exam and practical skills. Individuals must meet all requirements for certification, including but not limited to passing the certification exams (written and practical) in order to qualify for certification.

All applicants for renewal are required to complete the following criteria in order to renew certification:

  • Submit your renewal through the MODFS Acadis portal
  • Provide a summary of how your duties over the past three years reflect your current certification level.

Applicants for renewal for Fire Service Instructor I and IImust also submit:

  • Documentation of 24 hours additional training related to instructional areas, officer development, personal development and/or professional development. For every hour of verifiable instruction of a certificated course in either: a fire academy, educational institution, or National Fire Academy, or documented in-service training, you will receive one hour of credit. A minimum of 12 hours of training must come from instructional development courses or seminars attended.

Applicants for renewal for Live Fire Instructor/Live Fire Instructor-in-Chargemust also submit:

  • Documentation of performing at an annual live fire training or evaluation in one of the four positions (IIC, Safety Officer, Instructor or Ignition Team member). Must have participated in a minimum of one live fire burn and/or evaluation in each of the three years.

Applicants for recertification forFire Inspectormust also submit:

  • Documentation of 30 hours of training as a student or instructor, or any combination, in fire inspection related courses or seminars.All courses or seminars are subject to approval by the Division of Fire Safety. A letter from the applicant's supervisor listing applicant’s job description and attesting to the fact that the duty of the applicant is in the field of fire inspections is also required.

Applicants for renewal forFire Investigatormust also submit:

  • Documentation of 30 hours of training as a student or instructor, or any combination, in fire investigation related courses or seminars.All courses or seminars are subject to approval by the Division of Fire Safety. A letter from the applicant's supervisor listing applicant’s job description and attesting to the fact that the primary duty of the applicant is in the field of fire investigations is also required. The supervisor must verify the number of fires that the applicant has investigated during the three year period.

Applicants for renewal forTechnical Rescuermust also submit:

  • Documentation of 40 hours of training as a student or instructor, or any combination, over the past five (5) years in Technical Rescue related courses or seminars pursuant to your certification.All documentation submitted must include verification of practical skills performed during the training. All courses or seminars are subject to approval by the Division of Fire Safety.

Applicants for renewal forHazardous Materials Technicianmust also submit:

  • Documentation of 8 hours of training as a student or instructor, or any combination, over the past one (1) years in Hazardous Materials Technician related courses or seminars.All documentation submitted must include verification of practical skills performed during the training. All courses or seminars are subject to approval by the Division of Fire Safety.

NOTE: The Division no longer sends a renewal letter or small renewal card. To verify your certification status you must log in to your portal account. If you need a paper copy of your verification, click on the “Email Professional History Report” in the top right corner of your portal. You can email your report to any individual or click on the pdf link and download and print your report.
